Self-help: A Doctrine from Hell?

The Bible warns us that there will be a big turning away from the true faith in the last times. People will follow deceptive spirits and teachings that come from demons. In this series, "Doctrines of Demons" my goal is to shed light on what this falling away is and the tactics being used by the enemy to enable such.

The first episode of one of the doctrines is self-help.

1 Timothy 4:1 Now the Holy Spirit tells us clearly that in the last times some will turn away from the true faith; they will follow deceptive spirits and teachings that come from demons.

All bible verses are in NLT. I don't advise NLT for study purposes, but I prefer to publish articles using this translation for a more simple understanding of a general message. It's always good to compare any verses with the KJV because it's a word-for-word translation where NLT is paraphrased.

The Self-help Deception

The biggest deception of our lifetime.

This is a doctrine I have personal experience in, and it looks very bright and happy from the outside, but it opens your heart for deeper deceptions. The industry of self-help is the gateway for demonic spirits.

I used to have a handful of business clients in this industry, and unfortunately, it's filled with deception. It all sounds and looks good, but it's transformed as an angel of light and will eventually bring forth destruction.

2Co 11:14 - But I am not surprised! Even Satan disguises himself as an angel of light.

How do you fall into this deception?

It usually starts with a personal problem. Maybe you have issues in your marriage, business, career, anxiety, depression, and other material or mental things. You're looking for a breakthrough; you want to achieve more. You realize something is missing in your life, and you turn to self-help resources to solve these missing pieces in your life.

The Formats

Self-help can come in many shapes or forms, but there is one simple way to identify if something comes from this doctrine of demons.

A healthy doctrine of Christ will always point towards Christ himself and the cross. It always talks about the Gospel. A demonic doctrine will always point to yourself and other things.

The biggest format for these types of doctrines comes from self-help books and courses. Below is a basic list of clear self-help deception. Some of them you might have heard of and maybe even read:

  • Power of Positive Thinking
  • The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People
  • The Secret
  • How to Stop Worrying and Start Living
  • Awaken the Giant Within
  • You Can Heal Your Life
  • Think and Grow Rich
  • You Are a Badass: How to Stop Doubting Your Greatness and Start Living an Awesome Life
  • The Alchemist
  • The Four Agreements

You might also hear headlines like this that go along with other resources:

  • How to Live According to Your Purpose
  • How to Manifest Things Into Your Life
  • How to Stay Positive
  • How to Tune Into Your Spiritual Energy
  • Design A Life So Amazing, You’ll Want To Live It Over, And Over, And Over Again
  • How to Access Your Consciousness
  • How to Create 'Coincides' in Your Life

The sad truth is that many churches are preaching this message today. They fire you up and tell you of all the great things you can accomplish.

Please note that there are books that help you get into a positive state based on a biblical foundation. They point towards Christ and draw you closer to Him using biblical standards. Christ-like behavior is positive, spirit-filled, peaceful, and joyful, but it doesn't come from ourselves. It's a gift from God that we receive from the Holy Spirit. There is no other way. We can't activate it in some magical way other than reading the Word and spending time in prayer.

What are the dangers?

From a worldly perspective, self-help is everything that people think will help. They don't believe in God and think they need to do something to achieve their happiness. From a Christian standpoint, we know that we are not able to do anything. Christ has already done everything for us, and when we put our faith in Him, we die to ourselves so we can live through Christ, who is righteousness and the only Lord. Only if we are in Him because He is God can we be made righteous. Not through our own works so no one can boast.

The Open Door

The reason why this doctrine is so dangerous is because it opens the wrong doors. When you put your faith in Christ, you are opening the door for Christ. If you're putting your faith in worldly things such as self-help you are opening yourself up to the defeated kingdom of satan.

This false door will mislead and slowly bring you down into destruction. Satan can only enter into our hearts if he has legal rights to enter. The enemy gets legal rights if we put our trust into the wrong things (even trusting ourselves) or expose ourselves to emotions such as fear or disbelief.

Read till the end to learn how to close the wrong doors.

The truth is, we will never be perfect. It's only through Christ we can achieve anything. If our own works and righteousness would work, then why did Jesus have to die for us? He died so we can be righteous through him.

Rom 3:22 We are made right with God by placing our faith in Jesus Christ. And this is true for everyone who believes, no matter who we are.

As soon as we try to do something ourselves, if we try to change ourselves, we are already opening up ourselves for deception because we can't help ourselves. It's only by the grace of God and through the blood of Jesus Christ that He shed for us on the cross. The only way we can access that is by faith.

This is why God is raising up an army right now in this day. To show people, there's only one truth. There's only one way to eternal life and make people realize they are broken people. We are all broken people who need help. Everyone has their issues. Nobody is perfect. Wickedness has taken over, so God is putting more spirit-filled individuals in place to preach the true Gospel and not a perverted one or even a complete deception.

2 Timothy 3:1-2 1 You should know this, Timothy, that in the last days there will be very difficult times. 2 For people will love only themselves and their money. They will be boastful and proud, scoffing at God, disobedient to their parents, and ungrateful. They will consider nothing sacred.

In the passage above, we read about people loving only themselves. They will be boastful and proud of their achievements without giving any glory to the Creator of all things. Just like when man built the Titanic and said: "Not even God himself could sink this ship." We all know how that ended...

People that think they can do anything themselves are fools, and their solutions are only a quick fix. It's a deception, and God does not like it.

Romans 2:7-8 7 He will give eternal life to those who keep on doing good, seeking after the glory and honor and immortality that God offers. 8 But he will pour out his anger and wrath on those who live for themselves, who refuse to obey the truth and instead live lives of wickedness.

In Romans 2:7-8, we see two different audiences:

  1. People who seek the glory and honor of our almighty God.
  2. People who seek only themselves and refuse to obey the truth.

The passage also clearly describes what will happen to the people who live for God or, on the contrary, live for themselves.

  1. With God, you will have eternal life.
  2. Without God, He will pour out his anger and wrath.

How does living for ourselves look like?

First, we need to understand that only the Holy Spirit can reveal and convict us of sin. He is the one who opens our eyes and helps us draw closer to God. Pray this prayer for yourself and invite the Lord to help you convict you of anything that you need to change in your life:

Say this prayer: "Holy Spirit, if I live for myself, if there's any love towards myself instead to you my Lord and God, I ask that you reveal it to me. I ask that you convict me of my sin to repent and change my heart towards You. Amen."

The Truth

Now that we took a look into the deception let's look at the truth. Self-help is contrary to the truth. The truth always points to Christ and not our own efforts.

Colossians 2:8 Don’t let anyone capture you with empty philosophies and high-sounding nonsense that come from human thinking and from the spiritual powers of this world, rather than from Christ.

The above verse clearly tells us that there is a lot of high-sounding nonsense out in this world. A lot of humans like well-sounding ideas that tickle their ears. That's why it's so deceiving. It sounds good, but where is it coming from?

...come from human thinking and from the spiritual powers of this world..."

This is the answer. Empty philosophies will always come from human thinking and spiritual powers that are not from Christ. The truth will always come from Christ and be pointed back towards Him.

How do we know if a spiritual power is NOT from Christ?

The Holy Spirit will always glorify Christ and point to Christ. The spirit of the antichrist will always go back into self-righteousness, human wisdom, and empty promises. Multiple verses talk about this, but this one makes it clear:

1Co 12:2-3 - 2 You know that when you were still pagans, you were led astray and swept along in worshiping speechless idols. 3 So I want you to know that no one speaking by the Spirit of God will curse Jesus, and no one can say Jesus is Lord, except by the Holy Spirit.

...no one speaking by the Spirit of God will curse Jesus, and no one can say Jesus is Lord, except by the Holy Spirit.

Many think that this verse means a false spirit can't say "Jesus is Lord". What this verse actually means is that no other spirit than the Spirit of God can glorify Jesus. They will shift the attention to something else. They won't glorify him.

A person led by the Spirit is cautious not to put any glory on themselves. It's all put back on Jesus Christ. If someone tells them how good they are, their Spirit instantly tells them to direct the attention back to Jesus so He can receive the glory and not man.

Mar 10:18 "Why do you call me good?" Jesus asked. "Only God is truly good.

Our Identity in Christ

As Christians, we need to know our identity in Christ. Nothing does this better than the Word of God itself. I've compiled a list of verses below. Read it through from top to bottom, and I hope the living words encourage you.

Jhn 14:18-19 No, I will not abandon you as orphans--I will come to you. 19 Soon the world will no longer see me, but you will see me. Since I live, you also will live.

Jhn 16:27 or the Father himself loves you dearly because you love me and believe that I came from God.

1Co 6:17 But the person who is joined to the Lord is one spirit with him.

1Co 3:16-17 Don't you realize that all of you together are the temple of God and that the Spirit of God lives in you? 17 God will destroy anyone who destroys this temple. For God's temple is holy, and you are that temple.

1Co 2:16 For, "Who can know the LORD's thoughts? Who knows enough to teach him?" But we understand these things, for we have the mind of Christ.

2Co 6:16 And what union can there be between God's temple and idols? For we are the temple of the living God. As God said: "I will live in them and walk among them. I will be their God, and they will be my people.

2Co 6:18 And I will be your Father, and you will be my sons and daughters, says the LORD Almighty."

Eph 1:4-7 Even before he made the world, God loved us and chose us in Christ to be holy and without fault in his eyes. 5 God decided in advance to adopt us into his own family by bringing us to himself through Jesus Christ. This is what he wanted to do, and it gave him great pleasure. 6 So we praise God for the glorious grace he has poured out on us who belong to his dear Son. 7 He is so rich in kindness and grace that he purchased our freedom with the blood of his Son and forgave our sins.

Eph 2:13 But now you have been united with Christ Jesus. Once you were far away from God, but now you have been brought near to him through the blood of Christ.

Eph 2:19 So now you Gentiles are no longer strangers and foreigners. You are citizens along with all of God's holy people. You are members of God's family.

Col 1:21-23 This includes you who were once far away from God. You were his enemies, separated from him by your evil thoughts and actions. 22 Yet now he has reconciled you to himself through the death of Christ in his physical body. As a result, he has brought you into his own presence, and you are holy and blameless as you stand before him without a single fault. 23 But you must continue to believe this truth and stand firmly in it. Don't drift away from the assurance you received when you heard the Good News. The Good News has been preached all over the world, and I, Paul, have been appointed as God's servant to proclaim it.

Tit 3:3-7 Once we, too, were foolish and disobedient. We were misled and became slaves to many lusts and pleasures. Our lives were full of evil and envy, and we hated each other. 4 But--"When God our Savior revealed his kindness and love, 5 he saved us, not because of the righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy. He washed away our sins, giving us a new birth and new life through the Holy Spirit. 6 He generously poured out the Spirit upon us through Jesus Christ our Savior. 7 Because of his grace he declared us righteous and gave us confidence that we will inherit eternal life."

Jhn 15:15-16 I no longer call you slaves, because a master doesn't confide in his slaves. Now you are my friends, since I have told you everything the Father told me. 16 You didn't choose me. I chose you. I appointed you to go and produce lasting fruit, so that the Father will give you whatever you ask for, using my name.

Jhn 8:31-32 Jesus said to the people who believed in him, "You are truly my disciples if you remain faithful to my teachings. 32 And you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free."

Mat 5:14 "You are the light of the world--like a city on a hilltop that cannot be hidden.

Mat 28:18-20 Jesus came and told his disciples, "I have been given all authority in heaven and on earth. 19 Therefore, go and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. 20 Teach these new disciples to obey all the commands I have given you. And be sure of this: I am with you always, even to the end of the age."

Rom 5:2 Because of our faith, Christ has brought us into this place of undeserved privilege where we now stand, and we confidently and joyfully look forward to sharing God’s glory.

Rom 6:3-4 Or have you forgotten that when we were joined with Christ Jesus in baptism, we joined him in his death? 4 For we died and were buried with Christ by baptism. And just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glorious power of the Father, now we also may live new lives.

Rom 6:8 And since we died with Christ, we know we will also live with him.

Eph 2:10 For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago.

Phil 4:13 For I can do everything through Christ, who gives me strength.

Gal 2:20 My old self has been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me. So I live in this earthly body by trusting in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.

Closing the Wrong Doors

If the Holy Spirit convicted you today of any wrong doors that were opened, today is the day you can close them. It is by the power of the Holy Spirit and the blood of Jesus these strongholds in your life can be taken down.

Please keep in mind that there’s no specific formula. I’m sharing what I’ve learned and the Holy Spirit has opened to me. Don’t think that if you don’t do what I say you won’t have freedom. If you truly seek the Lord from your heart, he will deliver you.

First we need to close any open doors. We do this by renouncing certain things in our life that we think or know the enemy has gained access to us. In this certain doctrine, it will most likely be any books, audios, possessions or teachings.

  1. Make a list of everything that comes to your mind
  2. If the item is something physical, destroy it and throw it out. Don’t gift it to someone else.
  3. Now start renouncing all items on your list that are mental. You renounce it by simply saying: “I renounce all teachings and beliefs that are contrary to the Word of God. I break every evil covenant over my life in the name of Jesus Christ”.

Repentance means to turn away from sin and renew your mind. Here are the next steps to follow:

  1. Pray that you’re sorry for neglecting the truth and invite Jesus into your heart. Tell Him about your shortcomings and tell Him you want to serve Him. Tell Him that you repent of focusing on yourself and not on Him.
  2. Spend time in the Word of God to renew your mind and establish your foundation. Ask that the Holy Spirit helps you understand the scripture and that it finds deep roots in your heart.
